The Skyyn Score, explained

The Skyyn Score is a number from 0 to 100 that describes how your skin looks in one front-facing photo. It is the weighted average of four sub-scores, and it is designed to be compared with your own earlier scans.

Example Skyyn Score

Luminosity78
Microtexture84
Pore Visibility80
Tone Uniformity85

An example. Luminosity 78, Microtexture 84, Pore Visibility 80 and Tone Uniformity 85 give a Skyyn Score of 82.

The arc is the same one the app draws on the Progress tab. It fills as the number counts up.

How the Skyyn Score is calculated

The Skyyn Score is the weighted average of four sub-scores: Tone Uniformity counts for 30%, Microtexture for 25%, Pore Visibility for 25% and Luminosity for 20%. The result is rounded once, to a whole number.

Each sub-score is itself a number from 0 to 100. Skyyn's analysis first notes what it can see in the photo, region by region: forehead, T-zone, each cheek, nose, chin, under the eyes, temples and around the mouth. Each sub-score has to stay within 10 points of what those observations imply, so a number cannot drift away from the evidence behind it.

The four sub-scores
Sub-scoreWeightWhat moves it
Tone Uniformity30%Visible redness, dark spots and variation in tone across the face. More even scores higher.
Microtexture25%Visible bumps, roughness and dry patches. Smoother scores higher.
Pore Visibility25%How noticeable pores are, mainly across the nose, cheeks and forehead. Less visible scores higher.
Luminosity20%How light catches the skin: brightness and plumpness against dullness or excess shine.

Using the example above: 85 × 0.30 + 84 × 0.25 + 80 × 0.25 + 78 × 0.20 = 82.1, which rounds to 82.

What is a good Skyyn Score?

There is no pass mark. In the app, scores of 70 and above are shown in green, 40 to 69 in purple and below 40 in coral. The score that matters most is your own last one, because the Skyyn Score is built to show whether your skin is changing.

70 to 100Shown in green
40 to 69Shown in purple
0 to 39Shown in coral

The colours are a reading aid. They are not grades and they say nothing about the health of your skin. Two people with the same score can have very different skin, because the same total can come from different sub-scores.

Once enough people have scanned on the current scoring version, the share card can also show where your score sits among all Skyyn Scores, for example "Top 20% of Skyyn Scores".

How much does a score need to change to mean something?

Skyyn reports a change only when your Skyyn Score moves 5 points or more from the middle value of your last three scans. For a single sub-score the bar is 10 points. Anything smaller is treated as steady and no change is shown.

The reason is noise. Two photos of the same face taken minutes apart differ by about 3.5 points on average, with no change in the skin. A 3-point rise after a new moisturiser is therefore not evidence of anything, and the app will not present it as progress.

Sub-scores are noisier than the total because each is a single reading and the total averages four of them. That is why their threshold is 10 points and not 5. The accuracy page has the full numbers.

Why did my score change?

There are three common reasons, in order of how often they are the cause.

  1. The photo was different. Side lighting, a dim room, a tilted head or hair across the cheek all change what the camera can see. Dim photos tend to score slightly high, because the analysis cannot mark down what it cannot see.
  2. Your skin was different that day. Sleep, weather, exercise and the time of day all change how skin looks for a few hours.
  3. Your skin has changed. This is the one you are looking for. It shows up as a move of 5 points or more that holds across several scans.

To keep the first two out of the way, scan in the same place, in the same light, at about the same time of day. How to take a progress photo that is worth comparing.

What does a low-confidence scan mean?

Before scoring, Skyyn measures the photo itself: how sharp the area around the eyes is, how much of the skin is blown out or lost in shadow, and whether one cheek is much brighter than the other. If the photo is too weak to read reliably, the scan is marked low confidence. The score ring then shows a margin of ±6, and that scan is not used when the app works out whether your score changed. Retake it in soft, even light for a steadier read.

What does "Scoring updated" mean on my chart?

Every scan records which version of the scoring it was measured on. When we improve the scoring in a way that would make new scores incomparable with old ones, the version number goes up. From that point the trend chart breaks its line and shows "Scoring updated", your personal best starts again, and scores on either side of the line are never subtracted from each other.

Old scores are never rescaled or recalculated. To give you a starting point on the new scale, Skyyn reads your previous photo once more with the new scoring and uses that as the baseline for your first new scan. The current scoring version is 2, introduced in October 2026, when the scale was tied more closely to the recorded observations and scores moved from 5-point steps to whole numbers.

Can I compare my score with a friend's, or with another app's?

With a friend, loosely: you were both measured the same way, but different cameras, rooms and lighting add several points of difference before skin comes into it. With another app, no. Every skin score app defines its own scale, and a 75 in one has no relationship to a 75 in another.

What the Skyyn Score does not tell you

Scope. Skyyn is a personal skincare assistant, not a dermatologist. Readings reflect what is visible in your photo, not a medical diagnosis. If something on your skin worries you or keeps coming back, a dermatologist can give you a proper look.
